On the brisk morning of March 20th six Valle Student Council members and their moderator, Mrs. Mary Boyer along with chaperone Mrs. Jane Stoll left for Imperial, Mo. where they met up with five other schools to board a charter bus to Park Hill South High School in Kansas City, Mo. Valle students attending were Krista Flieg, Lexy Barley, Bree Kertz, Allie Weiler, Hannah Bahr and Matthew Skaggs.
Their destination was the Missouri Association of Student Councils State Convention. From the moment they stepped off of the bus excitement and activity was the general rule of things. They were greeted by schools running for state offices singing chants, cheering and offering small items saying vote for our school. Then came opening session with the familiar question, “Hey, MASC how do you feel? We feel good, oh we feel so good, hey!” The theme for the convention was Color Outside the Lines and indeed the school was full of color with murals, banners, black lights and more. To help students break free of confining lines and reach for more ideas small group sessions were scheduled to help everyone connect and share success stories to take home to their councils.
Speaker presentations on Friday and Saturday included Harriet Turk who encouraged students to think about their choices as she used her “tell it like it is” attitude to help students create a revolution in their lives. The vibrant Media Guy brought positive messages about life choices by using videos, music and narration. Houston Kraft spoke of building character and being a leader. The final presenter on Saturday morning was Danny V. Batimana who has created “Happiness is Now” He won over the crowd of around 1000 tired teenagers with his Zumba moves and by teaching them a dance and giving them guidelines to help fine happiness such as 1) find your passion and 2) always be yourself.
Of course food and fun were a big part of the convention and Park Hill South provided both. On Friday evening keeping with the color theme a parking lot dance began with students receiving packets of powdered paint to throw as they enjoyed the music. It was quite a colorful evening.
A special award was presented in the form of a wall hanging to Mrs. Mary Boyer for her years of service to Valle Catholic Student Council. Thank you, Mrs. B – and
