<strong><span style="color: #000080;">F</span><span style="color: #000080;"><strong>i</strong>fth Graders at Valle Catholic in Mrs. Kertz’s science classes are introduced to bridge structures.</span></strong>
<strong><span style="color: #000080;">After viewing real bridges and sketching various kinds of bridges these students demonstrated their understanding of the design, engineering, and construction processes of bridge building by constructing bridges using simple materials such as a limited amount of straws, 10 feet of yarn, and masking tape.</span></strong>
<strong><span style="color: #000080;">In choosing and designing their bridges in small groups, they realized that the planning stage is as crucial-if not more crucial-than the construction stage to prevent major changes in the final construction and to make sure their bridges were safe and strong. The final test was to pull a boxcar loaded with pennies for a total weight of 100 grams and a distance of 12 inches.</span></strong>
