On March 2, 2015 Valle Catholic Grade School celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Various activities were held throughout the day.

Some classes noted Dr. Seuss’s 111th birthday by reading his most famous book, The Cat in the Hat at  2:36 pm – to note the number of words in the popular book which is  celebrating its 58th Birthday this year. The Cat in the Hat has been popular since its publication. Dr. Seuss wrote the book because he felt that there should be more entertaining  and fun material for beginning readers. The 1626 word story includes only 236 unique words of which 54 occur  exactly once and 33 occur twice. The most common words, “the”, “and”,  “I” and “not” occur more than 40 times each. The longest words are  “something” and “playthings”. The Cat in the Hat has gone on to sell  over 7.2 million copies in the United States alone, making it the 9th  best-selling hardcover children’s book of all time.

Because March 2nd is also Read Across America Day thousands of schools participated by bringing together kids and books. Valle was no exception. Mrs. Metzger, assistant principal, visited classrooms to share a favorite book.
